Professionals

Every day we get referrals from, and make referrals to, a wide range of professionals and representatives of agencies and organisations.

These can include people who work within:

• Health
• Mental Health
• Social Care
• Education
• Support agencies e.g. Rape, Domestic Violence, Support for Children, Carers, Homelessness, Debt, Drug and Alcohol Service Providers

We also provide talks and presentations to other organisations in relation to misuse of drugs/alcohol and the impact on families.

Introduction to Supporting Drug & Alcohol Affected Families

a course by Phil Harris

Course Aim:

• To equip professionals with the necessary skills and understanding to support those
affected by a family members substance use to engage with services.

Objectives:

By the end of the course participants will have had opportunities to:

• Define addiction and dependence
• Describe how substance misuse affects family members
• Explore how families are intrinsic to changing drug and alcohol use
• Review local service provision
• Practice skills to motivate concerned others to enter specialised support services.

Trainer: Phil Harris

Phil is Patron of KWADS. Phil has worked in the drug misuse field for the last 17 years as a
practitioner, trainer and manager. Currently he works as a researcher, treatment designer and
writer in the area of evidence based practice, behavioural change and treatment policy. He is a visiting lecturer at Bristol University. He has published many articles and books including The Concerned Other: How to change problematic drug and alcohol users through their family members (2010).
